Andrew Stewart
‘Untitled’ (2015)
Series of 3D vessels
Ceramics, wood, plaster.
Stewart’s work combines large scale ceramic vessels with carved wooden forms
utilising discarded elements of the making process to explore texture and form. By
using recycled materials, such as, wood shavings and paper it gives a second
purpose to the materials that would otherwise be disposed. The main purpose is to
emphasise that natural textures and materials can be combined in an unexpected
manner to create objects which are functionally and aesthetically pleasing.
The understanding of the materials’ properties, characteristics and processes, such
as industrial crank clay to porcelain, is an important factor to ensure that the final
product is completed to high standards. Incorporating and using the properties of
other materials as well, such as, wood shavings and paper, adds a different
dimension to Stewarts work by making the viewer question how they was created.
